The MARAthon

HOW IT STARTED

The inception of the UltraMARAthon can be traced back to 2020, a pivotal year marked by a dire need for ranger and conservation assistance amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which severely limited tourism. In this unique scenario, the residents of the Mara found themselves in a remote area devoid of clients but brimming with the opportunity to connect with fellow residents.
During this period, a group of Mara resident initiated a weekly running gathering, fostering a strong sense of community among them. As conversations progressed, the idea of expanding beyond mere group runs and creating an event that could unite others in supporting conservation and community initiatives emerged. Simultaneously, a group from Naretoi, envisioned a similar event which would become the UltraMARAthon. Through collaborative efforts, the inaugural event was organised in 2020 in partnership with ForRangers, marking the beginning of an extraordinary venture that continues to flourish.

Race day

The MARAthon starts and ends at MEP Headquarter in Lemek Conservancy. A briefing with all information will be emailed out to all participants 10 days prior to the event. All participants will need to collect their race bib numbers prior to race day at designated locations, to be detailed in the pre-race briefing.

There is a strict cut-off time at 15:00, at which time a vehicle will retrieve any participants remaining on the course more than 2km from the finish line.

Post-race lunch and tea will be provided for all participants, followed by prize-giving.
